Incident Overview
On November 30th, authorities in Oviedo reported the seizure of more than seven kilograms of cocaine aboard a bulk carrier docked at the southern pier of Avilés. The operation involved personnel from the Guardia Civil, the Policía Nacional, and Customs Surveillance agents. The narcotics were found concealed within the cargo area of the vessel, which had recently departed from the port of Callao in Peru.
Discovery Details
The discovery came early in the afternoon, when various operational coordination centers received reports of a suspicious backpack found in the ship’s hold. The backpack contained multiple packages suspected to be narcotics. It was located beneath a load composed of zinc concentrate during the unloading process at the Port of Avilés. When authorities arrived at the scene, they confirmed that the backpack held seven rectangular packages wrapped in plastic and filled with a white powdery substance.
Investigation and Handling
The authorities conducted a narcotics test, which yielded a positive result for cocaine. Following this, the packages were seized and placed under custody for further processing. A joint team was formed, comprising members from the Guardia Civil, Policía Nacional, and Customs Surveillance, to investigate the origin and potential destination of the illicit substance. All findings are to be submitted to the Court of Instancy of Avilés.
Further Actions
The confiscated narcotics will be sent to the Department of Health at the Government Delegation of Cantabria for laboratory analysis. The investigation aims to trace the shipment’s route and clarify the individuals involved in its transportation and potential distribution.
