Details of the Seismic Event
On Saturday night, a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0 struck the northeastern part of Taiwan, according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA) of the island. At present, there are no reports of casualties or damages resulting from this seismic activity.
The quake occurred at 11:00 PM local time (“hora local”), which corresponds to 4:00 PM in mainland Spain, over the sea, approximately 32 kilometers east of Yilan County, located south of Taipei, the capital. The epicenter’s focus was at a depth of 72.8 kilometers beneath the surface.
Impact and Intensity
The earthquake’s intensity, which reflects the actual effect experienced during the tremor, was rated as level four in both Yilan and other locations across the island. This measurement is on a seven-level scale established by the CWA.
Electrical utility Taiwan Power Company reported that around 3,000 households in Yilan experienced brief power outages due to the quake.
Historical Context
This seismic event is the most significant to hit Taiwan since April 2024, when a magnitude 7.2 earthquake affected Hualien County. That earlier quake resulted in 19 fatalities and injured over a thousand individuals, illustrating the potential severity of seismic activity in the region.
